అమెరికా చదువులు-8

 

High school అనగానే,విధ్యార్ధులు చాలా మంది వారు తీసుకున్న AP subjects గురించి తరుచుగా మాట్లాడుకోవటం,అవి ఎంత కష్టంగా ఉన్నాయో,మంచి గ్రేడ్స్ వస్తాయో రావో,Final exam  లో 5 రాదేమో,4 వస్తే కాలేజ్ క్రెడిట్ వస్తుందా...ఇలా ఎన్నో ప్రశ్నలు. AP-Advanced Placement  అని అర్ధం. ఇంకా వివరం గా చెప్పాలంటే, ఈ AP subjects తీసుకోవటం వలన, High school  లో GPA  పెరగడమే కాక, college లో కొన్ని credits వస్తాయి కనక,విధ్యార్దులకు college  లో కొద్దిగా load తగ్గి, advanced subjects  తీసుకోవచ్చు.అన్నిటికీ pros and cons ఉన్నట్టే,AP Subjects ఎక్కువగా తీసుకున్న విధ్యార్దులకు high school లో GPA దెబ్బతినచ్చు.అందుకని సరిగ్గా balance చేసుకుని ఎన్ని subjects handle చెయ్యగలరో అన్నేsubjects తీసుకోవాలి. Ivy leagues  లో admission ki కావాల్సినది, all A's (చాలా వరకు, ఒకటో ఒకటో రెండో నాలుగు సంవత్సరాలలో B+ పడితే ఫర్వాలేదు), competitive SAT score (To be frank more than 2350, for some colleges may be between 2330-2350),excellence in one of the EC activity.
 

నాకు తెలిసిన ఇద్దరు విధ్యార్ధుల గురించి ఇక్కడ ప్రస్తావిస్తాను.ఇద్దరు ప్రాణ స్నేహితులు.ఒకరు అమెరికన్,ఒకరేమో మన తెలుగు అమ్మాయి.ఇద్దరు చిన్నపటినుంచి చాలా శ్రద్దగా చదువుకుని అన్ని గ్రేడ్స్ లోను ఒకరితో ఒకరు పోటీగా చదువుకుంటూనే,ఒకరికొకరు తీసిపోకుండా,వారి స్నేహాన్ని నిలుపుకుంటూ వచ్చారు. High school కి రాగానే తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి middle school varaku వరకు తను ఎంతో బాగా play చేసే Flute classes ఆపేసింది.High school  లొ Band/Music తీసుకోలేదు.అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి chorus classes continue చేసింది.తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి music కి బదులు computer science classes తీసుకుంది  9th grade లో.ఇద్దరికి ఎందరో విధ్యార్ధులు కోరుకున్నట్టే Ivy leages లో చదువుకోవాలనే కోరిక. 9th grade లో తీసుకోవాల్సినవి 7 subjects మాత్రమే అయినా,తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి ఎలాగు computer science classes తీసుకున్నాను కదా అని ఆ విధ్యార్ధి ఆ సంవత్సరం తనకి తాను గా AP బుక్ ఒకటి కొని తెచ్చుకుని ap computer science B exam కి (school లో చదివే 7 subjects  కాకుండా 8th subject  గా చదివి పరీక్ష రాసింది.చక్కగా 5 (highest possible score) తెచ్చుకుంది.అన్ని subjects లో 'A' grades తెచ్చుకుంది. అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి కూడా అన్ని subjects తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి తీసుకున్నవే చదివినా,computer science subject  కాకుండా chorus(music/chorus) class తీసుకుని  అన్ని subjects లో 'A' grades తెచ్చుకుంది.

ఇంతవరకు అంతా బానే ఉంది.flute classes తీసుకోకపోతే పోన్లే...చక్కగా ఒక AP subject అందునా అతి కష్టమైన లెవెల్ subject పూర్తి చేసేసానే అని ఆనందపడింది తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి.10th grade లో మళ్ళీ ఇద్దరు విధ్యార్ధులు అన్ని subjects కలిసి తీసుకున్నా, chorus advanced  లెవెల్ అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి తీసుకుంటే,తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి 9th grade లో basic biology subject  తీసుకుంది కాబట్టి ,10th లో AP biology తీసుకుంది.ఇదే కాక, అసలే సొంతం గా AP subjects  రాసిన అనుభవం ఉంది కనక, school లో తీసుకుంటున్న 7 subjects మాత్రమే కాక,AP environmental science అనే subject  కి బుక్ కొనుక్కుని చదవటం మొదలుపెట్టింది.ఇక్కడ ఒక విషయం చెప్పాలి.ప్రతి సంవత్సరం high school లో ఒక science subject తీసుకోవటం compulsory.9th లో biology,10th లో chemistry,11th లో physics.ఇక 12th లో అన్ని science subjects (high school level) వి చదివేసారు కాబట్టి,విధ్యార్ధులకు నచ్చిన ఏదన్నా ఒక science subject లో AP level subject తీసుకోవడం జరుగుతుంది. కాని ఇక్కడ మనం గమనించాల్సిన విషయం ఏంటంటే,తెలుగు అమ్మాయి 10th grade లో 3 science subjects  (Chemistry,AP Biology,AP Environmental science),ఒక math subject,ఒక language,ఒక social sciences subjects తీసుకుంది.అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి ఒక్కటే science subject(chemistry) తీసుకుంది.Final results వచ్చాయి...ఇద్దరికి అన్ని subjects లోను A's. అనందపడ్డారిద్దరు.తెలుగు అమ్మాయి రాసిన రెండు AP subjects లోను మళ్ళీ చక్కగా 5 తెచ్చుకుంది.అమెరికన్ అమ్మాయి  GPA కన్నా, తెలుగు అమ్మాయి GPA కొద్దిగా ఎక్కువ సాధించగలిగింది.10th grade చివరలోనే వారిద్దరు SAT-Math 2  పరీక్ష రాసి 800 (/800) తెచ్చుకున్నారు.తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి SAT-Biology exam కూడా రాసి 780 (/800) తెచ్చుకుంది.

ఇద్దరికి అప్పటికే 16 సంవత్సరాల వయస్సు కాబట్టి,ఇద్దరు summer లో internships కి apply చేసారు.Apply చేసే టైం కి తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి మూడు college level subjects (AP subjects) complete చెయ్యడం వలన,NIH (National institute of health)  లో ఒక scientist, biology + computer science combination లో విధ్యార్ధి కోసం వెతకడం,అతనికి ఎవ్వరు ఆ specific combination తో దొరకపోవడం వలన,తెలుగు అమ్మాయి resume చూసి, impress అయ్యి తనకి internship offer చెసారు. అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధికి internship ఎక్కడా దొరకకపోవడం వలన, biking.hiking చేస్తూ రిలాక్ష్ అయ్యింది.ఇక తెలుగు అమ్మాయికి internship offer తో నెలకి $1740.00 pay.రెండున్నర నెలలు ప్రతి రోజు,గంట నలభయ్యి ఐదు నిమిషాలు ప్రయాణం చేసి NIH కి వెళ్ళి పని చెయ్యడమే కాకుండా ఒక్కోరోజు గంటల తరబడి modelling చేస్తూ summer గడిపింది.ఒక్క శనివారం,ఆదివారం తప్ప  ఆ విధ్యార్ధికి relax అయ్యే టైం కూడా లేకుండా పోయింది.

Summer లో తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి పని చేస్తున్నlab లో ఇంకో విధ్యార్ధి ఇలా చెప్పాడు.ఎలాగూ నువ్వు 3 AP subjects complete చేసేసావు కదా, 11th లో మిగతా నాలుగు చదివేసి అన్నింటిలోను high score (5) తెచ్చుకుంటే  Siemens award ఇస్తారు.ఆ award (http://www.siemens-foundation.org/en/advanced_placement.htm) admissions కి బాగా సహాయపడుతుందని చెప్పడం జరిగింది.అసలే AP subjects  మత్తులో వుందేమో తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి వెంటనే అలోచించింది.తను ఎలాగూ 11th లో basic physics classes తీసుకోవాలి.ఒకవేళ అది skip చేసి direct గా AP Physics తీసుకుంటే?అప్పుడు AP chemistry,AP Calculus BC,AP Physics school లో 7 subjectsలో భాగం గా తీసుకుని, ప్రతి సంవత్సరం లాగా, ఒక AP subject(AP Statistics)  తనకి తాను సొంతం గా చదివేస్తే పోలా అనుకుంది.అనుకున్నట్టుగానే మూడు AP subjects 11th లో తీసుకుంది,వాటికి తోడు 11th లో అందరు తీసుకునే AP US History కూడా తీసుకుంది.అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి మాత్రం ఆ సంవత్సరం AP chemistry, AP Calculus BC , AP US History  తీసుకుంది.అదే సంవత్సరం చివరన వారిద్దరు ఇంకో రెండు SAT Subject tests,SAT exam కూడా ఇవ్వవలసి ఉంది.

అంతకు ముందు రెండు సంవత్సరాలు చాలా కట్టినమైన courses తీసుకోవడం,summer లో కూడా తీరిక లేకుండా పని చెయ్యడం,ఇక 11th లో అంతులేని భారం మొయ్యడానికి ప్రయత్నించడం...తెలుగు అమ్మాయి రాత్రి పగలు చదివినా,ఒక్క నిమిషం వృధా చెయ్యకపోయినా "A" grade రావడం చాలా subjects లో కష్టమైపోయింది.అప్పటి వరకు ఎప్పుడు "A" తప్ప ఇంకో grade చూదని విధ్యార్ధి కనుక,చాలా క్రుంగిపోయింది.Basic physics స్కిప్ చెయ్యడం వలన,AP Physics లో ఆ అమ్మాయి చాలా కష్టపడాల్సి వచ్చింది.దీనికి తోడు,ఆ సంవత్సరం పలు competitions కి prepare అయ్యి,అన్నింట్లోను awards కూడా తీసుకుంది.అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి క్రితం సంవత్సరాలతో పోల్చుకుంటే,కష్టమైన  subjects తీసుకున్నపటికి,అన్ని subjects లో మంచి మార్కులు తెచ్చుకుని అన్నింటిలోను "A" grades తెచ్చుకోసాగింది.సంవత్సరం చివరకు,తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధికి అన్ని subjects లో B+/B' grades,ఒక్క math లో తప్ప. SAT-Chemistry లో మాత్రం 800 సంపాదించుకుంది.SAT లొ 2350 తెచ్చుకుంది.అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధికి SAT-Chemistry లో 780, SAT లో 2375 తెచ్చుకుంది.ఇక AP subjects పరీక్షల్లో తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి ఒక్క AP Calculus BC  (5/5)  లో తప్ప అన్నింటిలోను 4 (/5) మాత్రమే తెచ్చుకోగలిగింది.ఫలితం తనకి Siemens award రాలేదు. అన్ని science and math subjects లోను 5 score  చెయ్యగలిగితే మాత్రమే ఆ award వస్తుంది.

తెలిసిన వారందరు తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధికి ధైర్యం చెప్పారు.నీ GPA కొద్దిగా తక్కువైతే అయ్యింది,నీకు competitions లొ awards ఉన్నాయి,నువ్వు science and math subjects లో అన్ని AP's complete చేసావు.5/5 మూడు subjects లోనే కదా రానిది.4  తక్కువ score కాదు. నీకు ఒక -prestigious institute లో internship ఉంది.నీకు తప్పకుండా Ivy's లో admission వస్తుంది అని చెప్పారు.మళ్ళీ 11th summer అంతా కష్టపడి పని చేసింది NIH లో తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి. అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి internship దొరకకపోవడం వలన,7,8th grades విధ్యార్ధులకు math & science  tutoring  చేసేది.Robotics competition లో award సంపాదించుకుంది అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి.12th  లో colleges కి apply చెయ్యడం,అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధికి 4 Ivy's లో admission రావడం,తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధికి ఒక్క Ivy లో కూడా admission రాలేదు.తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధి,ఆ అమ్మాయి తల్లితండ్రులు పడ్డ బాధ వర్ణాతీతం...నేను కూడా ఎంతో కష్టపడి చదివాను,నా తప్పేంటి.You have to challenge yourself with most difficult curriculum అని కదా అంటారు అందరు teachers......where did I go wrong  అని అడిగితే సమాధానం దొరకలేదు.చివరకు ఎందరో analysis చేసి తేల్చిందేమిటంటే Ivy's would like to see all A's -no compromise on that! Student's subject level difficulty చూడరా అంటే ఏమో! కాని ఎన్నో private schools  లో full scholarship తో తెలుగు విధ్యార్ధికి admission ఇచ్చారు.తనకు నచ్చిన ఒక పేరున్న private school లో full  scholarship తో చదువుకుంటుంది.అమెరికన్ విధ్యార్ధి తనకు నచ్చిన Ivy లో full fees కట్టి చదువుకోసాగింది.ఇద్దరు ఇప్పటికి స్నేహితులే... కాని  ఒకటే college కి వెళ్ళాలన్న వారి కోరిక మాత్రం తీరలేదు.

అందుకని take it easy on AP subjects అని అందరికి చెపుతారు నాకు తెలిసిన వారు ఎంతో మంది.ఎంత load handle చెయ్యగలిగితే అన్ని subjects  మాత్రమే తీసుకుని,mainly stress releief అవ్వడానికి చక్కగా music claasess or any fun activities కి  టైం spare చేసుకుంటూ, high school subjects plan చేసుకోవాలి విధ్యార్ధులు.

అమెరికా చదువులు-7

చాలారోజులుగా టచ్ లో లేని స్నేహితురాలు పద్మ ఫోన్ చేసింది.క్షేమ సమాచారలయ్యాక,అడిగాను అబ్బాయి ఏమి చదువుతున్నాడు అని."సాయి హైస్కూల్ కి వెళతాడు తొందరలో"అంది పద్మ."అప్పుడే పెద్దవాడైపోయాడే"అని నవ్వాను."నాకు మాత్రం దిగులుగానే ఉంది,హైస్కూల్ కి వెళుతున్నాడన్నమాటే కాని Time-management skills అసలు లేవు"అంది పద్మ."వాడే నేర్చుకుంటాడులే,అందరి లాగే"అని ధైర్యం చెప్పాను.

హైస్కూల్ లో successకి దోహదం చేసే ముఖ్యమైనవి మూడు factors-timemanagment skills,కొద్దిగా ముందుగా ప్లాన్ చేసుకుని జాగ్రత్తగా సబ్జెక్ట్స్ఎంచుకోవటం,విధ్యార్దులకు నచ్చిన,interest ఉన్నఒకటో,రెండో extra curricular activities ఎంచుకోవడం.హై స్కూల్ లో ఉన్న నాలుగు గ్రేడ్స్ (9-12) లో 7 subjects ప్రతి సంవత్సరం విధ్యార్ధులు తీసుకోవాలి. విధ్యార్ధులందరు math లో ఒకటే లెవెల్ లో ఉండకపోవచ్చు. ఒక అతి సాధారణమైన విధ్యార్ధి హైస్కూల్ లో ఎంటర్ అయినప్పుడు follow అయ్యే sequence ఇలా ఉంటుంది-Algebra-1(9th), Geometry(10th), Algebra-2(11th),pre-calculus(12th).కొద్దిగా advanced students sequence ఇలా ఉంటుంది.Geometry(9th),Algebra-2(10th),pre-calculus(11th),AP calculus AB/BC(12th).Advanced students sequence-Algebra-2(9th),pre-calculus(10th),AP calculus AB/BC(11th),college level math-either multi variable calculus, or differential equations (12th). English sequences-English-9,10,11,12 or English 9 honors,10 honors,11 honors,AP English. SAT exam రాయడానికి విధ్యార్ధులు Algebra-2 level math వరకు చెయ్యగలగాలి.అలాగే English-11 వరకు చదువుకుంటే వారు SAT exam తీసుకోవచ్చు.చాలా మంది విధ్యార్ధులు 7/8 గ్రేడ్స్ లోనే SAT పరీక్ష attempt చేసేసి మంచి scores  తెచ్చుకోగలుగుతున్నారు.SAT-Math,SAT-English,SAT-Writing-మూడు sections లో వచ్చిన marks కలిపి overall score నిర్ణయిస్తారు.Overall score -2400 కాబట్టి,ఒక్కొక్క section లో max score  800.

Science sequence -Biology (9th), chemistry (10th), physics(11th), and one more science class (this varies from school to school in different counties/states, and also can be studen't choice). Typically AP-Bology, AP-Chemistry ot AP-Physics classes are quite popular subjects too. History and social sciences-I will not go in depth into these, except that students require 4 credits here.Students are expected to take  3 creidts of Foreign language (three years of one language or two years of two languages.).Popular languages are spanish, Latin and french.

Quizes,exams,homework load  హైస్కూల్ లో చాలా ఉంటుంది.ఇక music,sports వగైరా extra curricular activities pursue చేస్తున్న విధ్యార్ధులకైతే academics మరియు వారి EC's balance చేసుకుంటూ, మంచి grades తెచ్చుకోవటం అంటే ఒక రకమైన చాలెంజ్ అని మనం చెప్పొచ్చు.Model united nations,debate clubs,School's year book club,Scholastic Writing Awards,varsity math teams (USAMO-united States of America Mathematics Olympiad,IMO-International Mathematical Olympiad,Science clubs,Biology olympiad,Physics olympiad,Chemistry olympiad,Science fair-school,regional,state level and Intel science and engineering fair,Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology,Intel Science Talent Search, Athletic clubs,Band boosters-All National Concert Band Festival,Choral Boosters,Brain bee,FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC),Spanish/Latin language awards etc.. are highly valued on high school resumes when applying to colleges along with GPA and SAT score.

టపా ఆంగ్లం లో రాసినందుకు ముందుగా క్షమాపణలు.

I mentioned in my previous series (Series -3) about few math competitions in elementary school level (like math league, math Olympiad and math continental league). All these contests are also administered  in middle schools and high schools. I posted some important links of books and resources in my previous series for the above competitions. In this series, I will not go too much into the details of math competitions administered in middle school level, but provide you with helpful aids and links. 

Math counts - very popular and prestigious contest in 6, 7, 8 or 7, 8 grades (middle school level) which is almost administered in every school and all states. MATHCOUNTS is sponsored by corporations and foundations like Raytheon, Northrop Grumman Foundation, Department of Defense, National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), CNA Foundation etc.

Every school conducts some preliminary contests and selects group of individuals who excelled in those tests. For duration of 3/4 months all those students form a club in their school and sit together for hours practicing the most difficult arithmetic problems. There are tons of resources and some online classes for all those parents who are interested in guiding their "self-motivated" kids to crack this contest. Calculators are allowed for some rounds and not allowed for some rounds. All students who are participating in this competition should be able to compute math very quickly in their brains. (Fast math computing skills). Math counts in my own words is pure arithmetic math contest. This contest is only administered in Middle school level.

Another competition which I would like to mention in this series is "AMC" American Mathematics Competition.  I would suggest students who are really interested in math to take this competition very seriously. When students apply to colleges merit scholarship forms will ask for AMC 12 score to assess math aptitude.AMC competitions are administered in 6th grade (rare, but there are schools) or from 7th and  8th garde  in some states/schools. Higher levels of these competitions will be administered in high school. There are different levels in this competition. AMC 8, AMC 10,AMC 12,American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME),United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) and the United States of America Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO),Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP), International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

At middle school level ,students will take AMC 8 and if they score very well in AMC 8, they can advance to AMC 10, and if they perform exceptionally well in AMC 10, they will be permitted to take AMC 12. However rest of other AMC competitions are all high school competitions (AMIE, USAMO,MOSP,IMO)

"ఆంటీ..టూ మచ్ వర్క్. చాలా రాత్రి వరకు హోం  వర్క్ చెయ్యాల్సి  వస్తుంది" అన్నాడు దిగులుగా."నెమ్మదిగా అలవాటు పడతావులేరా.." అని నవ్వి భుజం తట్టి అక్కడనుంచి స్నేహితురాలి దగ్గరకి వెళ్ళాను. 'ఎలా ఉంది రమా, మిడిల్ స్కూల్ experience? నీ కొడుకు పాపం అప్పుడే నిద్ర లేకుండా  చదువుకుంటున్నట్టున్నాడు?" అంటూ పలకరించాను. రమ బేల గా నా వంక చూస్తూ "ఏమి చెప్పమంటావు? మొదట్లో కొన్ని రోజులు ఉదయాన్నే లేవడానికి ఇబ్బంది పడ్డాడు. ఎలిమెంటరీలో ఉన్నప్పుడు 8:00 గంటలకు లేచేవాడు. ఇప్పుడు మరీ 6:00 గంటలకి లేవడం, 6:40 కి స్కూల్ బస్ ఎక్కడం, రోజంతా ఉరుకులు పరుగులు ఒక క్లాస్ నుంచి వేరే క్లాస్ కి , 2:30 కి  after school clubs  అన్ని అయ్యేసరికి ఇంటికి చేరుకునేది సాయంత్రం 4 గంటలకు. కొద్దిసేపు బ్రేక్ తీసుకున్నాక మళ్ళీ 5:00 గంటలకు మొదలుపెడతాడు హొంవర్క్..అదేంటో గంటల తరబడి చేస్తూనే ఉంటాడు.. అర్ధ రాత్రి అయినా హొం వర్క్ అవ్వదు వీడికి. మరుసటి రోజు ఏదన్నా quiz  కాని test కాని ఉంటే ఇంక చెప్పక్కర్లేదు. ఇంకా ఆలశ్యం అవుతుంది వాడు పడుకోడానికి.పాపం వాడికి వీకెండ్ అయినా కొంచెం బ్రేక్ దొరుకుతుంది అనుకుంటే, మళ్ళీ  ఏదో ఒక activities అని, extra classes అని ...నాకైతే వాడిని చూస్తే జాలి వేస్తుంది" అని కంట నీరు పెట్టుకున్నంత పని చేసింది రమ. "ఫర్వాలేదు రమా.. అలవాటు పడిపోతావులే, ఎప్పుడన్నా వాడు ఖాలీగా గా నీ కళ్ళ ముందే తిరుగుతుంటే, నీకు వాడు ఏదో  చెయ్యటం లేదేమో అని బెంగ పెట్టుకునే స్థాయికి నువ్వే ఎదుగుతావులే. నీ కొడుకు, వాడి వయస్సు వాళ్ళు, అందరు కొద్ది రోజుల్లో అలవాటి పడిపోతారు ఈ middle school transition" అని సమాధానమిచ్చాను.

"Math ఏ లెవల్ లో ఉన్నాడు సన్నీ?" అని అడిగాను."Algebra చేస్తున్నాడు "అని చెప్పింది రమ.. "గుడ్" అన్నాను మెచ్చుకోలుగా."విధ్య వాళ్ళ అబ్బాయి seventh grade లోనే geometry చేస్తున్నాడు తెలుసా?".అంటూ తనకు తెలిసిన విషయం చెప్పింది రమ. "అయితే ఆ అబ్బాయి math లో jem అన్నమాట" అన్నాను. "నాకు తెలియలేదు సమ్మర్ లో (6th class అయిపోయాక సమ్మర్ బ్రేక్ లో) స్టూడంట్స్ algebra క్లాస్ తీసుకోవచ్చు అని. ఆ కోర్స్ పూర్తి చేసాక 7th grade లో geometry కి admission తీసుకోవచ్చు అట. ఆలశ్యం గా తెలిసింది నాకు, అప్పటికే registrations అయిపోయాయి" అని బాధ పడింది రమ. "పర్వాలేదు రమా, algebra  అయితే హాయిగా , easy గా చేసుకుంటాడు, బెంగ పడకు. next year  తీసుకోవచ్చు గా" అన్నాను. "అలా కాదులే, ఎంతన్నా విధ్య కొడుక్కి చాలా అడ్వాంటజ్ ఉంది. వాడు ఈ సంవత్సరం ఎలక్టివ్ తీసుకోకుండా algebra, ఇంకా geometry కూడా స్కూల్ లోనే తీసుకుంటున్నాడు.  Pre calculus skip out exam pass అయితే అప్పుడు high school లో 9th లోనే AP Calculus తీసుకోవచ్చు" అంటూ వివరించి చెప్పింది."ఓహో! అలాగా?" అన్నాను. రమ చెప్పినట్టుగానే, చాలా మంది స్టూడంట్స్ math లో advanced లెవెల్స్ లో ఉండడం నాకు కూడా తెలుసు. 

Math levels గురించి (middle స్కూల్ నుండి 12th వరకు) కొన్ని తెలుసుకోవాల్సిన వివరాలు. మూడు రకాల గా స్టూడంట్స్ ను విభజిస్తే,

1. non GT/Advanced math లో లేని స్టుడంట్స్ 6th grade  నుండి 8th grade  వరకు math 6, math 7, math 8 చేస్తారు.

2. GT/advanced math స్టూడంట్స్ సాధారణం గా math ఒక లెవెల్ ఎక్కువ లో ఉంటారు. అనగా, వారు 6th grade నుండి 8th grade వరకు math 7, math 7 honors, math 8 honors  చేస్తారు.

3. Exceptionally talented స్టూడంట్స్ (in math) కు కొన్ని స్టేట్స్ లో 6th grade లో "IAAT(Iowa alegbra aptitude test)  అనే పరీక్ష పెడతారు. ఆ పరీక్ష "Algebra" knowledge ని test చేస్తుంది అని చాలా మంది పేరంట్స్ అపోహ పడుతూ ఉంటారు. కాని ఈ IAAT పరీక్ష కేవలం students readiness to crack algebra in 7th grade అన్నది test చెయ్యడానికి మాత్రమే ఉపయోగిస్తారు. ఈ పరీక్ష లో ఒకవేల 95 percentile score  చెయ్యగలిగితే  ఆ తరువాత "math 8" end of the year exam  పెడతారు. ఈ రెండు exams లోను 95 సాతం మార్కులు (differs from state to state)  score చేసిన  స్టూడంట్స్ అందరికి 7th grade లో Algebra admission ఇస్తారు. Math 8 exam ఎందుకు పెడతారు అన్న ప్రశ్న ఉదయించవచ్చు ఇక్కడ. నార్మల్ స్టూడంట్స్ Algebra 9th grade లో  తీసుకుంటారు. అందుకని advanced గా 7th grade లో తీసుకుంటున్న స్టూడంట్స్ math 8 లెక్కల పరీక్ష కూడా పాస్ అయితే కాని వారికి algebra  లో admission ఇవ్వరు. 
ఈ స్టూడంట్స్  6th grade నుండి 8th grade వరకు math 7, Algebra, geometry, Algebra-II & Trignometry(one year)   చేస్తారు.

అమెరికా చదువులు-4

చిన్నానగారి అబ్బాయి సురేష్ ఫోన్ చేసాడు "అక్కా.. సంజయ్ SCAT లో చాలా బాగా స్కోర్ చేసాడు అని ఆనందంతో చెప్పాడు.  సంజయ్ కి ఫోన్ ఇవ్వు.."I will congratulate him" అని అన్నాను. "Hello అత్తయ్యా" అని సంజయ్ అనగానే "Good job రా నాన్నా , ఇలాగే బాగా చదువుకో" అని చెప్పి ఫోన్ పెట్టేసాను. ఇంతకీ సంజయ్ చదువుతున్నది 4th grade. మరి SCAT పరీక్ష ఏంటంటారా? John Hopkins university వాళ్ళు ప్రతి సంవత్సరం Talent search అని కొన్ని tests పెడతారు  2-8 th grade విధ్యార్ధులకు.ఈ పరీక్షలు పెట్టేది summer లో వాళ్ళ programs/classes కి eligibility decide చెయ్యడాని కే అయినా.. ఆ summer programs కి తమ పిల్లలను  పంపని వారు కూడా ఆ పరీక్షలు ఫీస్ చెల్లించి రాయవచ్చు. సంజయ్ చదువుతున్నది 4th grade  అయినా సంజయ్ రాసిన SCAT పరీక్ష 6th grade level లో ఉంటుంది. వచ్చే results కూడా percentiles లో ఉంటాయి. Above grade level english/math లో ఉన్నారా లేదా అని తెలుసుకోవచ్చు, ఈ పరీక్షలలో వచ్చే score ని బట్టి. Middle school (6/7-8 grades) లో CTY (center for talented youth)  ద్వారా students SAT పరీక్ష తీసుకోవచ్చు. SAT విధ్యార్ధులు high school  లో మాత్రమే తీసుకోగలరు. కాని CTY Talent search  లో member  అయితే SAT 6 th grade నుంచే తీసుకోవచ్చు. ఇలాంటిదే ఇంకొక Talent Search exams conducting university NC లో కూడా ఉంది అని విన్నాను. నాకు వివరాలు పెద్దగా తెలియవు. Elementary school నుంచి middle school transition  కొంచెం కష్టమైనదే! అప్పటి వరకు academics serious గాతీసుకున్నా,తీసుకోపోయినా..middle school   నుంచి కొంచెం focus చేసి చదువుకోవాలి. Homework లాంటివి చాలా elementary schools లో (public schools) ఇవ్వరు. ఇచ్చినా, 10/20 minutes కంటే ఎక్కువగా ఉండకపోవచ్చు. హట్టాత్తుగా middle school  కి వచ్చేసరికి, ఉన్న 7 subjectsలోను homework తప్పని సరిగా ఉంటుంది.ప్రతి రోజు అన్ని subjects teach  చెయ్యరు. "Block schedule" అని ఒక రోజు 3 subjects ,  ఒక రోజు 4 subjects అలా ఉంటాయి. Middle school నుంచే electives తీసుకోవడం మొదలెడతారు విధ్యార్ధులు. ఏదో ఒక foreign language  (spanish/french/Latin etc..) తీసుకోవచ్చు. ఒకవేళ విధ్యార్దులు middleschool లో తీసుకోకపోయినా high school లో అయితే తప్పనిసరిగా తీసుకోవాలి.

 

ఇంకొక పెద్ద మార్పు ఏంటంటే, అప్పటివరకు, ఒకటో, రెండో పుస్తకాలతో స్కూల్ కి వెళ్ళే విధ్యార్దులందరు హట్టాత్తుగా బోలెడన్నిbooks/folders  మొయ్యాల్సి వస్తుంది. ప్రతి రోజు 3 లేదా  4 subjects మాత్రమే classes ఉంటాయి కాబట్టి, అన్ని classes కి అన్ని folders/books  తీసుకుని వెళ్ళరు. ప్రతి విధ్యార్ధికి lockers allot చేసేది middle school లోనే!Lockers అంటే books/folders/bag/lunch box పెట్టుకోడానికి ఒక storage place లాంటిది. ప్రతి lockerకి కీ ఉంటుంది. ఏ subject class అయితే ఆ సబ్జెక్ట్ books/foldres మాత్రమే తీసుకుని వెళతారు. మిగతా పుస్తకాలన్ని లాకర్ లోనే ఉంటాయి. Challenge ఏమిటంటే  ప్రతి class కి మధ్య gap may be  5 minutes ఉంటుందేమో. Classes  అన్ని ఒకటే floor లేదా.. building లో ఉండకపోవచ్చు. అందుకని, వాళ్ళు ఒక class అవ్వగానే ఇంకొక classకి almost  పరిగెట్టుకుంటూ lockers దగ్గరకి వచ్చి, books/folders మార్చుకుంటూ ఉంటారు. ఆ 5 minutes  లోనే లాకర్ దగ్గరికి వెళ్ళడం, మళ్ళీ next class ఎక్కడ ఉన్నా...ఆ place కి వెళ్ళడం జరిగిపోవాలి.కొంచెం కష్టమే అయినా...నెమ్మదిగా అలవాటు పడిపోతారు. యంత్రాల్లా చక చక కదులుతారు ఒక class అవ్వగానే, next class కి వెళ్ళడానికి.

Middle school subjects -math, science, social, PE, English,  Music(string/band), Electives (Foreign language falls under this) . Elementary school లో విధ్యార్దులకు ఒక teacher అన్ని subjects teach చెయ్యటం జరుగుతుంది. కాని middle school  నుంచి ప్రతి subject కి different teachers ఉంటారు.Homework కి, quizzes and Tests కి marks ఉంటాయి.ఇవ్వన్ని కలిపి grade determine చేస్తారు.ప్రతి stateకి grading different గా ఉంటుంది కాని mostly on an average 93-100% score చేస్తే"A" grade  వస్తుంది. గుర్తుపెట్టుకోవాల్సినది ఏమిటంటే, ఒక్క quiz/homework /test  లో కాని 50% కంటే తక్కువ score చేస్తే almost ఆ subject లో "A" తెచ్చుకోవడం చాలా కష్ట్టం. Consistent gaa perform చేస్తేనే కానీ మంచి grades తెచ్చుకోవడం అంత సులభం కాదు. After school clubs గురించి, math and science competitions గురించి, volunteering activities గురించి next పోస్ట్ లో ...

అమెరికా చదువులు-3

మా బాబు above grade  లెవెల్  math  చేస్తాడు, రీడింగ్ 2 grades advanced గా ఉన్నాడు, అయినా మా బాబు టీచర్  math లో, English  లో "S" కాని "G " కాని grades ఇస్తుంది. racism  అనుకుంటా.. అని బాధపడుతుంది నా స్నేహితురాలు రమ్య. టీచర్  conference  లో అడిగాను,  ఎందుకు బాబుకి "O" grade ఇవ్వటం లేదు అని. బాగానే చదువుతున్నాడు అంటుంది టీచర్ , కాని grades ఎందుకు ఇవ్వటం లేదో తెలీటం లేదు depression గా ఉంది అని బాధపడసాగింది రమ్య. ఎక్కువగా వింటుంటాను ఇలాంటివి. ఇక్కడ కొన్ని states లో K,1,2 grades వరకు letter  grades 'S(satisfactory), 'G'(good), 'O' (outstanding) అని ఇస్తారు. 3-12 grades లో "A", "B", "C" ఇలా letter grades ఉంటాయి.విధ్యార్ధులకు grades టీచర్  స్కూల్ లో ఇచ్చిన వర్క్ ని బట్టి, చాలా వరకు class లో  వాళ్ళు   perform చేసిన దాని బట్టి grades ఇస్తారు. ఏ  grade లో ఉంటే  ఆ  grade level లోనే వారిని observe చేస్తారే  తప్ప, ఆ విధ్యార్ధి ఎంత above grade level లో ఉన్నాడు  అన్నది టీచర్స్ చూడరు. వాళ్ళ communication skills, వాళ్ళు అందరితో కలిసిపోయే తీరు, వాళ్ళ overall behavior,consistent గా grade level లో బాగా  perform చేస్తున్నారా అన్నది ముఖ్యం. ఇంకొక విషయం ముఖ్యం గా గుర్తుపెట్టుకోవలసినది ఎమిటంటే,ఇక్కడ అన్ని పరీక్షలలోను మంచి మార్కులు సాధించి, మంచి   grades తెచుకున్నా, టీచర్ కి ఆ విధ్యార్ధి మీద సదభిప్రాయం లేకపోయినా, లేక టీచర్ ద్రుష్టిలొ విధ్యార్ధి  పడకపొయినా  విధ్యార్దులకు అది దెబ్బ!టీచర్  recommendations కి  చాలా weightage  ఉంటుంది. మార్కులు వచ్చినా, రాకపోయినా, academic గా  brilliant  కాకపోయినా, టీచర్ కి కనక సదభిప్రాయం విధ్యార్ధి మీద  ఉంటే అది చాలా అద్రుష్టంగా భావించవచ్చు.

Elementary స్కూల్ లో competitions/educational aids గురించి కొన్ని వివరాలు. Kumon :  మన ఇండియా  పద్దతిలో "Practice makes perfect "  లా to some extent, లెక్కలేన్నన్ని practice sheets ఇచ్చి math లో, basic fundamentals of math  బాగా నేర్పిస్తారు. సాధారణంగా kumon లాంటి centers లెక్కలు చక చక చెయ్యటానికి ఉపయోగపడతాయే తప్ప,aptitiude tests కి పెద్దగా ఉపయోగపడవు. kumon  english - నాకు తెలిసి comprehensions practice  చేసుకోవచ్చు.  I don't recommend them . కాని గుర్తుపెట్టుకోవాల్సినది ఏమిటంటే, every child is different. మీ పిల్లలకు ఎలాంటి enrichment అవసరమో మీకంటే ఎక్కువగా ఇంకెవ్వరికి తెలియదు కదా. Elementary school level   నుంచి బుక్ రీడింగ్ అన్నది తప్పనిసరిగా school లో emphasize చేసినట్టు, ఇంట్లో కూడా వీలైనంతవరకు వరకు importance ఇవ్వండి. వాళ్ళు ఎలాంటి బుక్స్ చదివినా సరే encourage చెయ్యండి. Fiction, science fiction or any kind . SCORE-(coaching for Math, science and math)-computer లో  software , grade లెవెల్ బట్టి questions వస్తూ ఉంటాయి. scores వస్తాయి చివరిలో.scores  బాగుంటే  next లెవెల్ కి advance అవుతారు, లేకపోతే
ఒకటే లెవెల్ లో questions  వస్తూ ఉంటాయి. ఒక వేళ  ఏమన్నా సందేహాలు  ఉంటే నివృత్తి చెయ్యడానికి ,అక్కడ సహాయం చేసేవారు ఉంటారు,కాని నేను చూసినంత వరకు చాలా మంది పిల్లలు అక్కడ   ఆడుతూ  ఉంటారు, mouse తో , keyboard తో.ఎక్కువ సాతం multiple choice questions/answers  కాబట్టి, ఏవో choices select  చేసుకుంటూ ఉంటారు.link : www.escore.com Looks like now it is Kaplan! ఇంక ప్రతిభ కల విధ్యార్ధులకు ALOHA (http://www.aloha-usa.com/arithmetic.html) లాంటివి ఉపయోగపడతాయి.ముందు ముందు "Math Counts" లాంటి పరీక్షలకు మంచి basic foundation ఇస్తాయి ఇలాంటి coaching centers. However again the key is not all students are really ready to do these mental calculations in their head, some of them do complain their brain hurts! so keep this  in mind! ఇక్కడ middle school లెవెల్ నుంచి calculators ఇచ్చేస్తారు విధ్యార్ధులకు. what they say is " do you know how to solve the problem? that is important , calculators can compute..". ENOPI  (Math critical thinking program) బాగుందని విన్నాను.

Competitions attend  చేసినా చెయ్యకపోయినా ఈ బుక్స్ కొన్నుకుంటే అవి చాలా ఉపయోగపడతాయి.ఇంక  science competitions లో అతి ముఖ్యమైనవి- science fair and Science Olympiad. Science fairs  అన్ని స్కూల్స్ లో elementary school level లో ఉండవు. Science Olympiad  కొన్ని schools  లో   5th, 6th grades నుంచి మొదలయినా,middle and high  schools మాత్రమే వీటిలో ఎక్కువ సంఖ్యలో విధ్యార్ధులు పాల్గొంటూ ఉంటారు.(http://soinc.org/).ఎక్కువగా elementary school level   లో  ప్రాచుర్యం పొందిన science program  - Odyssey of the mind competition - (http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/). ప్రతి సంవత్సరం 5 categories లో problems choose  చేసుకుని teams  participate చేస్తాయి regional, county , state and international level లో .గుర్తు పెట్టుకోవాల్సినది ఏంటి అంటే, మంచి team దొరికితే సమస్య లేదు.లేకపోతే మీరు కనక coach చేస్తుంటే చాలా తల నొప్పులు ఉంటాయండోయి! International  లెవెల్ వరకు ఒక team  ని తీసుకెళ్ళిన అనుభవంతో చెపుతున్నాను! చాలా స్కూల్స్ లో ఈ math competitions కాని, science competitions  కాని ఉండవు. అలాంటప్పుడు  స్కూల్స్  లో PTA (Parent Teacher Association) ఉంటుంది కదా..అక్కడ మీరు propose చేసి, like minded  people   కొంతమంది పూల్ అయ్యి,మీరు స్కూల్ ని represent చేస్తూ lead తీసుకొవచ్చు,లేదా individual గా కాని group గా కాని registration చేసుకుని మీరు competitions కి school తో నిమ్మితం లేకుండా పాల్గొనవచ్చు.summarize చేస్తే,book reading, some extra math prep at home (recommending math league books ) in elementary school level should be good enough! ఇంతకు ముందు చెప్పినట్టుగా only if your kids  are genuinely interested, then enrich them above their grade level. వాళ్ళు స్కూల్ లో నేర్చుకుంటున్న విధ్య , అక్కడ creative gaa గా వాళ్ళు చేసే project workతో చాలా నేర్చుకుంటారు విధ్యార్ధులు. School grades are very important , తరవాతే  additional math, english or science enrichment  అన్నీను....

"అత్తయ్యా, are you coming to my graduation?" ఐదు సంవత్సరాలు నిండిన నా మేనల్లుడు దగ్గరనుంచి ఫోన్."లేదు రా...sorry, ఇప్పుడు రాలేను, సమ్మర్ లో వస్తాను." అని చెప్పాను." మా friend వాళ్ళ  grand parents వస్తున్నారు, why can't you come అత్తయ్యా?" అని అడుగుతున్న వాడిని చూస్తే భలే ముచ్చటవేసింది. ఇంతకి వాడు ఈ సంవత్సరం kindergarten లో చదువు పూర్తిచేసుకుని, 1st gradeకి వెళుతున్నాడు. Kindergarten కి graduation ఏంటి అనుకుంటున్నారా? kindergarten పాస్ అయినందుకు ఆనందంతో చేసుకునే చిన్న celebration (kindergarten పట్టా తీసుకుంటాడు) అన్న మాట. ఇక్కడ kindergarten పూర్తి చేసాక ,elementary స్కూల్ అయిపోయాక (1-5/6), middle స్కూల్ అయిపోయాక (6/7-8),  high స్కూల్ అయిపోయాక (9-12) తప్పని సరిగా graduation అని ఒక event celebrate చేసుకుంటారు.వాటినే  kindergarten graduation అని,elementary స్కూల్  graduation అని,  middle  స్కూల్  graduation అని,high స్కూల్  graduation అని అంటారు. మా అమ్మాయి high స్కూల్  graduation కి అమెరికా లో ఉన్న బంధువర్గం అంతా రావటం జరిగింది. మా అమ్మాయి ఇండియా ఫోన్ చేసి "అమ్మమ్మ...నా graduation  కి రావొచ్చు కదా" అని అడిగింది. అమ్మ అడిగింది ఫోన్ లో "graduation  అంటే?" అని...మా అమ్మాయి  వివరంగా చెప్పింది. అమ్మ విస్మయం తో "ఎంటీ? intermediate పాస్ అయితే celebration? ఏమి సాధించావని తల్లీ? నువ్వు నిజంగా graduate అయిన రోజు వస్తాలే.ఇలాంటి వన్నీ వింటేనే చిరాకు" అని విసుక్కుంది అమ్మ.

ఇంక syllabus విషయానికి వస్తే k-5/6 syllabus అంతా kindergartenలో ఇలా ఉంటుంది. ఉదాహరణకి, లెక్కలు తీసుకుందాము. kindergarten లో syllabus  ఇలా ఉంటుంది. Number and Number Sense (Focus: Whole Number Concepts) ,Computation and Estimation (Focus: Whole Number Operations), Measurement (Focus: Instruments and Attributes),Geometry(Focus: Plane Figures), Probability and Statistics (Focus: Data Collection and Display),Patterns, Functions, and Algebra (Focus: Attributes and Patterning).
6th grade లో syllabus ఇలా ఉంటుంది. Kindergarten నుంచి elementary  స్కూల్ విధ్యార్ధులకు ఒకటే టీచర్ అన్ని subjects (English, Math, Science and Social Studies టీచ్  చేస్తారు. ఇంతకు ముందు పోస్ట్ లో వివరించినట్టు స్కూల్ లో GT curriculum కి వేరుగా టీచర్స్ ఉంటారు.అలాగే english/reading/math లో advanced గా ఉన్నవారికి వేరుగా టీచర్స్ ఉంటారు. ఇతర దేశాలల నుండి వలస వచ్చిన విధ్యార్ధుల english మాట్లాడడం, రాయడం , చదవటం కష్ట్టమైన వారికి విడిగా ESL (English as Second language)  టీచర్స్ ఉంటారు.  ఎక్కువ సాతం టీచర్స్ విధ్యార్ధులకు ప్రాజెక్ట్ వర్క్ ఇస్తారు అన్ని సబ్జెక్ట్స్ లోను.

ఇక k-2nd grade వరకు పరీక్షలు ఉండవు. 3rd grade లో స్టేట్ పరీక్షలు ఉంటాయి. ఈ పరీక్షలు public school,private school, home school  విధ్యార్ధులందరూ రాయాలి. కొద్దిమంది పిల్లలు స్కూల్ లో విధ్య అభ్యసించడం కన్నా వారి తల్లి తండ్రులు వారికి ఇంట్లోనే అన్ని subjects teach చేసి పరీక్షలు మాత్రం designated centers లో తీసుకుంటారు.(home schooling) .Usefull links :

అమెరికా చదువులు -1

"అక్కా నీతో మాట్లాడాలి" చిన్నాన్నగారి అమ్మాయి గీత   ఫోన్ చేసి అడిగింది. రేపు మాట్లాడుకుందాము, మధ్యానం లంచ్ కి కుదురుతుందా? అని అడిగాను. మేమిద్దరం పని చేసే ఆఫీస్లు దగ్గర కావటం వల్ల అప్పుడప్పుడు ఇలా లంచ్ లో కలుసుకోవడం పరిపాటే! ఇద్దరము దగ్గరలో ఉన్న ఒక రెస్టారంట్ లో కలిసాము. కొద్దిగా దిగులుగా కనిపించింది గీత. "ఏంటి మీ ఆయనతో గొడవ పడ్డావా?" అని అడిగాను. "లేదక్కా, చిన్ను గురించి" అంది. "చిన్ను? వాడికేమైంది? ఆరోగ్యం బాగుంది కదా?" కొంచెం ఆదుర్దాతో అడిగాను. చిన్ను గీత కొడుకు, నాలుగు సంవత్సరాలు వాడికి. "ఆరోగ్యం బానే ఉంది, కాని వాడితో పెద్ద చిక్కొచ్చి పడింది అక్కా,వాడి ఏజ్ కి చాప్టర్ బూక్స్ కూడా చదువుతున్నారు, వీడు అసలు రీడింగ్ చెయ్యటంలేదు. అన్ని విషయాలలోను చురుకుగానే ఉంటాడు, రీడింగ్ అంటే చాలు, అసలు ఇంట్రెస్ట్ చూపించటం లేదు. దానితో అసలు వీడికి రీడింగ్ వస్తుందా అని బెంగగా ఉంది " అంది."ఫర్వాలేదులే నెమ్మదిగా చేస్తాడులే రీడింగ్, ఇంకా చిన్నవాడే కదా" అన్నాను. "ఎంటక్కా అలా మాట్లాడతావు, మా neighborhood లో వీడి ఏజ్ వాళ్ళందరూ చదువుతున్నారు. వీడికి ఎమన్నా ప్రోబ్లం ఉందేమొ" అని బాధపడుతున్న కస్సిన్ ని చూస్తే నవ్వొచ్చింది. ప్రస్తుతం చిన్ను ఒక pre-school కి వెళుతున్నాడు.అందరి పిల్లలాగే చలాకిగా ఉంటూ, బాగా తెలివైన వాడని అనుకుంటూ ఉంటాము. "ఇదేమంత బెంగ పడాల్సిన విషయం కాదు. ఇంకొక సంవత్సరం ఆగు,చక్కగా చదువుతాడు." అని సమాధానపరిచాను. గీత దిగులు నేనైతే పోగొట్టలేనని తెలిసి టాపిక్ మార్చి కాసేపు ఇండియా విశేషాలు మాట్లాడుకుని తిరిగి ఎవరి దారిన వాళ్ళం వెళ్ళిపోయాము.

Elementary school  లో కి అడుగు కూడా పెట్టని చిన్ను గురించి అంత దిగులు పడుతున్న గీత అందోళనను నేను కొట్టి పాడెయ్యలేను.కాంపిటీషన్ అలానే ఉంది మరి. 2 సంవత్సరాల వయసు నుంచే రీడింగ్, లెక్కలు రుద్దేస్తున్న కాలమిది. అమెరికన్స్ వారికి పుట్టిన పిల్లలందరికీ చాలా చిన్న వయసు (ఆరు నెలల వయసు) నుండే పుస్తకాలు చదివి వినిపిస్తూ ఉంటారు.   పిల్లలు పుస్తకం లో బొమ్మలు చూస్తూ అల్లరి చేస్తూనే ఉంటారు, అయినా వారికి బుక్ రీడింగ్ చేస్తూ చిన్న వయసు నుంచే ఒక మంచి అలవాటును వారికి నేర్పుతారు. ఇక్కడ Elementary school (k-5/6) అంటే kindergarten నుంచి ఆరవ (6) తరగతి లేక  ఐదవ (5) తరగతి వరకు విధ్యార్ధులు ఈ స్కూల్స్ లో చదువుకుంటారు.ఇక్కడ కొద్ది మంది తప్ప ఎక్కువ సాతం ఇండియన్స్ పబ్లిక్ స్కూల్స్ కే  వెళతారు.ఫీస్ లు ఉండవు. ఖర్చు పెద్దగా ఉండదు. ఎక్కువగా రక రకాల బుక్స్ రీడ్ చెయ్యటం, కొద్దిగా బేసిక్ మేత్ నేర్పడం తప్ప kindergarten, 1st  గ్రేడ్ లో పెద్దగా చదువు చెప్పటం అంటూ ఉండదు. కాని నాకు తెలిసి చాలా రకమైన క్రేఫ్ట్ వర్క్, ఇంకా రంగు రంగుల పెన్సిల్స్ తో బొమ్మలు వేస్తూ, ఆర్ట్ వర్క్ చేస్తూ, ఆడుకుంటూ, స్కూల్ కి వెళ్ళడం అంటేనే ఇష్టపడేటట్టూ గా ఉంటుంది మొదటి రెండు సంవత్సరాల ప్రాధమిక విద్య. ఎక్కువగా నీ గురించి, నీ కుట్టుంబం గురించి రాయమని రైటింగ్  assignments ఉంటాయి. ఒక లైన్ లో ,కాని రెండు లేదా మూడు లైన్స్ లో ఎదో వంకర టింకరగా అప్పుడప్పుడే నేర్చుకుంటున్న పదాలతో రాస్తూ ఉంటారు విధ్యార్ధులు.  హోం వర్క్ అంటూ ఏమి ఉండదు. స్కూల్ డ్రెస్స్ కూడా ఉండదు. ఎవరికి నచ్చిన దుస్తులు వారు ధరించవచ్చు. ఇలా ఆడూతూ పాడుతూ కాలం గడిపేస్తున్న విధ్యార్ధులకు తల్లి తండ్రులకు తెలియకుండానే కొన్ని స్టేట్స్ లో (అన్ని స్టేట్స్ లో పబ్లిక్ స్కూల్స్ లో ఈ పరీక్షలు ఉండక పోవచ్చు,New york, Virginia, Maryland, DC, California, North Carolina, kansas etc..) అకస్మాత్తుగా ఒక పరీక్ష పెడతారు. అవి ఇంటెల్లిజెన్స్ -తెలివి తేటలను పరీక్షించే టెస్ట్స్. సాధారణంగా phsycologists IQ level తెలుసుకోవడం కోసం ఈ పరీక్షలు పెడుతూ ఉంటారు. వీటినే 1st  గ్రేడ్ చివరిలో కాని, 2nd  గ్రేడ్ లో కాని  పెడతారు. నాకు తెలిసిన ఈ పరీక్షల పేర్లు- Cognitive abilities tests (verbal aptitide, non verbal aptitude, quantitave aptitude), Naglieri Non-Verbal Ability Test ( non verbal aptitude ),  Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (verbal aptitide, non verbal aptitude ) etc... వీటినే gifted and talented  tests అని కూడా అంటారు. ఈ పరీక్షలలో cuttoff  మార్కులు తెచ్చుకుంటే  స్కూల్ administration  తల్లి తండ్రులకు ఒక లెటర్ ద్వారా తెలియపరుస్తారు మీ పిల్లలు Gifted and Talented  మొదటి రౌండ్ లో సెలెక్ట్ అయ్యారు అని.  అప్పుడు కాని తల్లి తండ్రులకి ఇలాంటి పరీక్షలు ఉంటాయి అని కూడా తెలియదు. తర్వాత రౌండ్ లో ఒక  application process లో విధ్యార్ధుల గ్రేడ్స్ 1st గ్రేడ్, 2nd గ్రేడ్ వి, వాళ్ళ టీచర్ రికమ్మండేషన్స్ లాంటివి జోడించి ఇంకో కమిటీ కీ పంపుతారు. అందులో కూడా సెలెక్ట్ అయితే, అప్పుడు ఆ విధ్యార్ధులను 3rd గ్రేడ్ నుంచి gifted and talented (GT)  కిడ్స్ అని చెప్పి వారిని వేరే స్కూల్స్ కి   పంపుతారు. కొన్ని స్టేట్స్ లో వేరు గా అలా స్కూల్స్ ఉండవు ( ఆ స్టేట్  budget బట్టి ఉంటుంది), అలాంటప్పుడు అదే స్కూల్స్ లో విడిగా ఈ  GT కిడ్స్ ని pool చేసి చదువు చెపుతారు. వీరి curriculum కొద్దిగా లెక్కలలో, science లో అడ్వాన్సడ్ గా ఉంటుంది.లెక్కలలో మాత్రం ఒక గ్రేడ్ ముందుగా చదువుతారు. (అంటే 3rd లో ఉంటే 4th గ్రేడ్ మేత్ చేస్తారు). science లో ప్రాజెక్ట్ వర్క్స్ లాంటివి ఎక్కువగా ఉంటాయి.

ఒకప్పుడు ఇలాంటి పరీక్షలు ఉంటాయని కాని, ఇలా  సెలెక్ట్  చేస్తారని కాని మాకు తెలిసేది కాదు. స్కూల్ నుంచి సెలక్ట్ అయ్యరని తెలిసేది అంతే.ఇప్పుడు వలస వచ్చిన భారతీయులు ఎక్కువ అయిపోయి, అన్ని విషయాలు ముందుగా తెలుసుకుని,ఈ పరీక్షలకు పిల్లలను ప్రిపేర్ చెయ్యడం మొదలుపెట్టారు.పుట్టగొడుగులుగా coaching centers వెలిసాయి. పుస్తకాల వేట మొదలుపెట్టి కొన్ని excercise books చేయించ సాగారు. మనం చదువలకు ఇచ్చే విలువ అలాంటిది. నాకైతే ఆ స్కూల్స్ లో వాళ్ళు చెప్పే చదువుకంటే అందరూ తెలివైన పిల్లలు ఒకే చోట ఉండటం వలన, మన పిల్లలు  మంచి వాతావరణం లో ఉంటారు. ఇప్పుడు మా గీత అవేదన మీకు అర్ధం అయ్యే ఉంటుంది ఎందుకు చిన్ను ఇంకా బుక్ రీడింగ్ చెయ్యటం లేదని బాధ పడుతుందో. ఈ  GT  పరీక్షల గురించి తల్లితండ్రులు పడే stress (అవునండీ, రెండవ తరగతి చదువుతున్న పిల్లల  గురించి stress (7 year kids)) , GT/ non GT kids elementary స్కూల్ లో అభ్యసించే విద్య, వాటి వివరాలు ఇంకో పోస్ట్ లో...
